Interview with Edmund Simental

Who would you say has been the single biggest influence in your life in getting you to where you are now in your career?

John Coltrane. John made me want to pick up the saxophone. I also believe in my skill levels and I believe in not taking those skills for granted.

At what point in your life did you make the decision to become a professional musician and actually record your own albums?

It was early on in my career after playing the Monterey Jazz Festival.

What would your top “desert island” classic albums be, regardless of genre… the albums you turn to time after time for your own personal enjoyment and inspiration?

Anything by “Return to Forever.”

What would be the most important piece of advice you’d impart to a young musician just starting out in the jazz/smooth jazz arena?

Learn how to solo and be comfortable doing solo work. Then learn the business of music.

Going back in your life as far as you can remember, what song or performance is the first you recall hearing and being affected by?

John Coltrane’s “My Favorite Things” is one of my favorite albums by him. I love the way he methodically blows his horns. His music brings on total inspiration.

What’s your absolute favorite part of the world, and why?

I love Thailand. Thailand has beautiful people, great food, and Thailand is blessed with natural beauty. Its islands are amongst the most scenic and beautiful in the world.

What aspect of the creative process, from concept to market, do you personally find to be the most rewarding?

I love performing – I find it all very rewarding – from the time I hear the music in my head, writing the song, arranging and composing it, to taking it to the stage for live performance. My goal is to lift people’s spirits so they can escape to happiness.
